Africa on the Board at Glasgow 2026
Seven days in, seven Commonwealth Games Associations from the continent have reached the podium. 43 medals. 14 gold. 16 records rewritten.
South Africa sits fifth with 22, every one won in the pool, and second on the swimming table behind Australia. Pieter Coetze swept all three backstroke titles, his 51.77 in the 100m a Games record, an African record, and the second fastest swim in history. Chad le Clos took a twenty-first Commonwealth Games medal, more than any athlete in the history of these Games.
Nigeria is sixth with 12, and 10 of those came off the weightlifting and para powerlifting platforms. Folashade Oluwafemiayo broke the world record twice in one competition, 172kg then 175kg. Rita Ferdinand set a world record in the heavyweight class and still finished second.
The firsts matter as much as the totals. Emmanuel Eseme ran 9.83 for Cameroon, the fastest race ever run at a Commonwealth Games, his country's first athletics gold and its first medal in twenty years. Florence Niyonkuru's 10,000m bronze is Rwanda's first Commonwealth Games medal in five appearances. Zinabu Issah put Ghana on the board, Husnah Kukundakwe did the same for Uganda.

The Table
Where it stands
Forty-three medals is the headline, but the shape underneath it is the more interesting number. Two nations account for thirty-four of them. South Africa and Nigeria are level on gold and separated by ten medals, and between them they hold more than three quarters of everything Africa has won in Glasgow.
Below that pair the distribution is thin and, in three cases, brand new. Cameroon, Ghana and Rwanda have one medal each, and for two of them that single medal is the most significant result in years.

Twenty-Two From the Pool
South Africa
Every South African medal in Glasgow came out of the water, and the swimming programme has now finished. Twenty-two is the country's best ever return in the pool at a Commonwealth Games, and it put them second on the swimming medal table behind Australia, their highest placing in the sport after three previous thirds.
The individual story is Pieter Coetze, who swept all three backstroke titles. Only one other swimmer has managed that at these Games, Mitch Larkin at Gold Coast 2018. He lowered the Games mark three times in the 50m alone and finished the week with six medals.

Beneath the two headlines, depth produced the total. Lara van Niekerk defended her 50m breaststroke title after four years of health setbacks that had her considering quitting. Erin Gallagher and Aimee Canny finished on five medals apiece. Five of the twenty-two came from relays, and four of those set African records.
What it means for the days ahead. With the pool closed, anything South Africa adds now must come from athletics, weightlifting, netball, bowls or the track. Their medal rate will fall sharply, and the table will tighten.
Ten From the Platform
Nigeria
Nigeria's twelve medals are almost as concentrated as South Africa's. Ten came off the lifting platform, split between para powerlifting and weightlifting, and all six golds came from those two sports. Three arrived on the opening night, when Nigeria took three of the four para powerlifting titles available.
That programme produced the two biggest marks of the Games by any African athlete, both world records, set in the same competition by two women on the same team.
On the track the return was narrower but historically useful. Kayinsola Ajayi ran 9.90 for bronze in the 100m, Nigeria's first medal in the event since Olusoji Fasuba's silver at Melbourne 2006, and Temitope Adeshina took bronze in the women's high jump.
A Lockout and a Long Wait
Kenya
Kenya's five medals came in two very different shapes. The first was entirely familiar: Edmund Serem, Simon Koech and Leonard Bett locked out the men's 3,000m steeplechase podium. It is the seventh time Kenya has swept that event at these Games, after 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018.
The second was not familiar at all. Joshua Amunga's bronze in the 60kg weightlifting is only the second weightlifting medal Kenya has ever won at a Commonwealth Games, and the first since Collins Okoth in 1994.

Emmanuel Eseme won Cameroon's first Commonwealth athletics gold and its first medal in twenty years. Zinabu Issah's shot put F57 silver was Ghana's first of these Games.

The thread worth watching. Para sport is producing a rising share of African medals here. Nigeria's three para powerlifting golds, Nathan Hendricks and Christian Sadie in the pool, Danika Vyncke's African record, Husnah Kukundakwe's silver for Uganda and Zinabu Issah's for Ghana. On the current count, a quarter of Africa's medals in Glasgow have come from para events.

Still to Come
Why this table can still move
Boxing has not yet awarded. Because losing semi-finalists take bronze, medals in that sport are decided in a single afternoon, and both Botswana and Nigeria still have boxers in the draw. Botswana would become the eighth African nation on the table. The athletics programme also has its biggest days left.
Africa does not lack talent. It lacks the infrastructure that
turns talent into visibility, and visibility into value.
